European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
